The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and his family watch a man die

The following isn’t timely; a lot of you have known it for two decades. Too bad.

I didn’t watch much Fresh Prince so I forgot about Hilary’s boyfriend Trevor, who proposed to her while bungee-jumping on live TV, and how that turned out.

Aggravatingly, embedding is disabled. So click and watch the video, then come back.

Ha ha ha! What funny slapstick! He fell to the ground! Aunt Viv tries to hide it from Ashley! They keep running jokes after the accident. Comedy! Laughtrack!

Turns out Trevor died. Cool prayers, Uncle Phil.

While Hilary was playing dumb about the President so we could keep laughing, her boyfriend was dead. She just watched him die on live television. Later she brings back the wrong ashes from the crematorium, where he was presumably sent because his earth-buffeted body was too mangled for a proper burial.

This is a story all about how her life got flipped, turned upside down. She’d like to take a minute, just sit right there, she’ll tell you how she became queen of a town called despair.

there are a couple other heavy Fresh Prince episodes that force Will, as well as the viewers at home, to contemplate their own mortality:

The first is the anti-drug episode, titled “Just Say YO!”  The episode synopsis on the back of the DVD box really sums up the standard Fresh Prince writers’ treatment of serious subject matter:

“Will learns a sobering lesson after Carlton pops the wrong pills from Will’s locker, mistaking amphetamines for vitamins, and winds up in hospital. Does Will accept glory or admit the truth?”

The second notable episode is “Bullets Over Bel-Air”, the one where Will gets shot and ends up in the hospital.  Carlton reacts to the near-tragedy by embracing Libertarian ideals and carrying a .38 Special around in his dorky Members Only jacket.  In the episode’s last scene, Carlton visits Will at the hospital and shows Will his new piece.  Will is disappointed in Carlton, and forces him to hand over the gun.  Carlton leaves in a huff, and Will, now alone in the hospital room, opens up the gun’s chamber.  The gun’s loaded!  The episode ends with Will crying hysterically as the bullets fall into his lap.  This episode was way weird because, unlike the other two episodes mentioned on this post, it is (perhaps the only) instance of the Fresh Prince writing team taking a dramatic event and making it more, not less, melodramatic than it should be.  Here’s the clip (go to 4:41): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScJ3ur3A9v0&feature=related
